1976

1976

The beginning

Hy-Ram was incorporated in 1976 by Mr Peter J Hallam.
Working in tandem with our partners, Britton and Kimberly Ltd (Grange Avenue, Mansfield), a high precision, fully equipped machining facility, Hy-Ram specialised in the design and sale of hydraulic rams, pumps, power units, manifolds and other associated components.

1981

1979

Acquisition

Hy-Ram acquired Britton and Kimberley including on-going business, stock, all assets, and a workforce of approximately 25 personnel. This acquisition, coupled with the appointment of Colin Simpson as General Manager gave scope for further expansion and diversification.

1989

1980

Mining equipment

Hy-Ram worked for a range of clients; however, we began to specialise in the coal mining industry, with c80% of output going underground. We became firmly established as a key manufacturer of equipment, supplying UK coal fields nationwide. Flagship products included: Underground Train Hydraulic Braking Systems, Hydraulic Pumps and Mine Roof Supports.

1995

1982

Oil and Gas

Hy-Ram also began to move into the Oil and Gas Off-shore industry. Large projects were carried out for the design, manufacture, and commissioning of various hydraulic equipment for use on Off-shore Drilling platforms. Consultancy work and troubleshooting for British Gas was also carried out on a number of large installations.

2000

1984

Introduction to Butt Fusion

With considerable knowledge amassed in the design and manufacture of Hydraulic Cylinders and Hand Pumps, Hy-Ram designed, prototyped and field trailed our first Butt Fusion Machine, the BFM180 Manual.
The 250, 315 and 400mm models quickly joined the range, and our Butt Fusion story began.

2010

1987

British Gas approval: Butt Fusion

Hy-Ram were amongst the first companies to be formally recognised for Butt Fusion Machine manufacture by British Gas.
Following a rigorous third-party testing regime, we gained full British Gas approval to BG Engineering standard – PS PL2 Polyethylene pipes and fittings for natural gas and suitable manufactured gas – Part 3 – Butt Fusion machines and ancillary equipment.

2019

1988

Hy-Ram Hire and new additional premises

Coupled with the sale of equipment, 1988 saw the introduction of Hy-Ram Hire. Predominantly hiring Butt Fusion machines to local gas and water contractors, the business was prospering, and secondary premises were sourced on Hermitage Lane, Mansfield, giving much needed additional workshop accommodation, with the benefit of a 20-tonne overhead crane; a real necessity for manoeuvring large off-shore fabrications!

2021

1990

Launch of Fully Automatic Butt Fusion

With on-going R & D work carried out by British Gas into PE pipe and the fusion process, the requirements of the Butt Fusion industry were changing rapidly. The Hy-Ram Semi-Automatic range followed on, quickly superseded by Fully Automatic machines incorporating Microprocessor controlled Power Units and pop-up or auto-eject Hotplates.

2019

1991

Large Diameter Squeeze Off

As the use of PE gathered pace within the UK Gas industry, new installation and maintenance equipment were required. Hy-Ram recognised this and began work on other PE related products, noticeably; the much-acclaimed Large Diameter Squeeze Off units that were approved by British Gas to PS PL2 – Part 7.

2021

1991

Hy-Ram’s International Story Begins

With the gravitas of the British Gas approvals and distribution network design, and the advancement of PE pipe technologies expanding globally, new opportunities arose. Due to Hy-Ram’s expertise and technical approvals, access to several key markets became opportune. Alliances were made in Argentina, Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Egypt. Many of these regions still continue to thrive today, some with our original partners.

2019

1993

Product development

Throughout the early to mid 90’s, Hy-Ram’s business continued to expand. Complimentary product ranges were designed and developed, in response to our customers’ needs, increasing our profile in the Gas and Water pipeline industry. This included a range of Under Pressure Drilling, Pipe Cutting and a range of Electrofusion tools and equipment.

2021

1995

Repair and calibration

A repair and calibration department was incorporated to provide services for customer owned plant and equipment, of both Hy-Ram and third party manufacture.

2019

1998

Valve and fittings business born

Working closely with Severn Trent Water’s New Products Committee, the Hi-Flow Drilling Saddle range and Sandwich Valve were developed and released to market. Sales accelerated quickly as legislation drove the need for increased amounts of ‘Flushing points’ within the network. Our success here was further supported by our ability to manufacture the complimentary under pressure drilling equipment.

2021

1999

Procurement of new factory, warehouse, and offices

In September, Hy-Ram procured larger premises at Pelham Street, Mansfield.
These premises gave potential for greater space both in terms of workshop/ storage areas and in addition the company profile was generally raised to a new level.

2019
