The Importance of Regulations and Standards For Distribution Pipelines

Distribution pipelines are crucial underground systems for the utilities sector. Their significance in day-to-day usage for households across the UK means that failures and unsafe practices are simply not an option. A single compromised joint or tool can result in costly network downtime, catastrophic environmental damage, or even public health crises.

This industry that serves such a critical element of modern society requires equipment that is built to last and certified to withstand volatile underground conditions. Many industry standards are in place to ensure that these systems will not fail and cause such disruption.

At Hy-Ram Engineering, we ensure that we adhere to rigorous industry regulations and third-party standards in everything we do. For over 50 years, we have proudly committed ourselves to these benchmarks, developing pipeline equipment that exceeds these guidelines to serve the industry better. Our dedication to excellence has led to us being a Trusted Approved Supplier to all UK Water and Gas Networks.

In this article, we will unpack the importance of these regulations at every stage of the development lifecycle for utility pipelines, and how we are committed to them. From quality design through to safe on-site execution of our products for pipeline maintenance and repair, let’s explore the regulations that keep the utility sector safe and efficient.

Designing for compliance and excellence

Building safety and adherence to industry standards into pipelines begins before the equipment even arrives on-site.

Since our establishment in 1976, we have proudly designed and manufactured all of our pipeline tooling and equipment in-house. From our head office in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, we are able to produce quality products that align with best practice compliance, and to our own highest standards.

By manufacturing everything in-house, we are in full control of the safety and quality of our products, ensuring that they meet exact GIS (Gas Industry Standards), WIS (Water Industry Standards), and EN (European Norms) specifications. These technical industry regulations ensure that the design, materials, manufacture, and testing of all pipelines are safe and reliable for use.

Our team of experts, with their decades of industry experience, also ensure that the products we manufacture only use quality, compliance-approved, and durable materials that are suitable for our hire and sale services.

Third-party approvals

As a company committed to quality assurance in everything we do, we are frequently audited to internationally recognised standards. This ensures that the products we design are validated and approved by third-party experts for guaranteed safe usage throughout the utilities sector.

Certification from third-party organisations provides independent, unbiased assurance that a supplier’s processes are legally compliant and up to high industry standards. They are usually re-tested annually to ensure the business is continuing to comply with the most up-to-date regulations.

WRAS-approved products

Poorly maintained and repaired pipelines can have detrimental effects on public safety. Our dedication to quality within the water sector means developing WRAS-approved products, providing peace of mind to water networks that public health is actively protected by using our equipment.

The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is set up to prevent the contamination of public water supplies. WRAS determines whether or not a product complies with the regulations set out to ensure the safe consumption of water that runs through pipelines. Holding the WRAS approval means that the product has gone through rigorous testing to ensure it meets these regulations.

This regulation ensures that the products:

  • Do not contaminate the water
  • Do not affect the taste or smell of drinking water
  • Use suitable water fittings for public water supplies connected to plumbing systems within buildings

All of the materials and coatings we use to manufacture our range of pipe fittings and valves are proudly WRAS approved.

On-site health and safety best practices

Following the manufacturing and regulatory approvals of our equipment, it can be reliably used on-site. We ensure the safe use of our equipment by providing user manuals on every product range we provide for both sale and hire.

These manuals outline all safety guidelines and best practices for using our equipment, such as never using electrofusion boxes in wet weather conditions. They also outline the need for non-negotiable safety precautions, including PPE and how to safely handle the lifting of our heavy tools.

We also offer a huge range of products to keep your team safe on the job. This includes:

When you hire from us, all of our products, procedures and terms and conditions are HAE certified, ensuring our products stay in peak condition as well as keeping risk to your team and your customers to a minimum.

To ensure our range of equipment is being used safely and responsibly every time, we offer training on ours and our partner-manufactured products. The training our team provides is both practical and tailored to the needs of our customers, helping utility infrastructure teams understand the technical aspects, as well as how to operate safely.
